SUMMARY:Art House 310 First Friday – Lindsey Kernodle & Steve Nicholson
DESCRIPTION:Art House 310 First Friday – Lindsey Kernodle & Steve Nicholson\nOpening Reception | First Friday September 4th\, 2026 | 6-10pm\nThis event is free to attend and open to the public. Show hangs through September 20th\, 2026. \nArt House 310 is located at 310 S. Laura. Two blocks SE of Douglas & Washington in downtown Wichita. \nNOTE: Open gallery hours throughout the exhibition are generally Tuesday and Thursday\, 6-9pm and Sunday\, 1-4pm. \nLINDSEY KERNODLE \nLindsey Kernodle is a painter drawn to the untold stories of the natural world. Her work directs attention\, our most limited resource\, toward the countless\, under-acknowledged wonders unfolding all around us. \nHow do humans understand ourselves in the context of the entire natural world? Humanity’s entire span on Earth is only 1/500th the time ants have existed here. A single tablespoon of soil can hold 10\,000 to 50\,000 different species. These facts are humbling\, mind-boggling—they pull us out to see the bigger picture\, and back in to notice its everyday wonders. We have much to learn from the countless other ways of being alive. \nBlending surrealism with realistic portraiture of humans and nature\, Kernodle collapses environments—above and below water\, land and sky—to emphasize our interconnectedness. Her dreamy\, full-color worlds capture the small miracles of daily life while gesturing toward larger questions: as the species with the greatest capacity to shape this planet\, what is our duty to it? Political undertones surface throughout\, threaded with the knowledge that our time is short and our footprint\, however small\, still matters. \nKernodle has created original illustrations for clients including the Kansas Wildlife Exhibit\, National Geographic\, Point Reyes National Seashore\, and Yale University. She is passionate about using her art to raise awareness around protecting ecosystems. \nSee more of Lindsey’s work online: LindseyKernodle.com and on Instagram: @lrkernodle \nSTEVE NICHOLSON \nHello! Welcome to my show at ArtHouse 310. \nYou might say I am self-taught\, but self-learning would be a much better description. My current primary focus is oil painting\, ink\, watercolor\, and metal/wood sculptures. \nMy current work shown here is the result of approximately six years of dedicated practice. \nI came back to art at a late stage in my life\, unexpectedly really. I carried my work home with me\, and it was taking a toll. I needed something to calm my thoughts. So in 2008\, I took an acrylic painting class at my local recreation center. The instructor just happened to be my former high school art teacher. I had never painted in my life\, not even in high school art class. \nThis set me on a path I needed. I painted with acrylics for fun\, off and on for about 12 years. It helped relieve some of my job stress. \nWhile I was painting one evening\, my 6-year-old niece Abby came in and asked if she could buy some paintings. I told her she could have them\, but she wanted to buy them. So my first sale was to her for .25 cents each! \nMy painting underwent a major change in 2000; the Wichita Art Museum hosted the “Foot in the Door” exhibit. It gave me the incentive to paint something serious and worth looking at. I had also changed to oils at this time\, which I discovered worked better for my style of painting. \nThis exhibit also changed my art practice. It gave me a bit of confidence. I became more serious\, more focused on art\, more dedicated to the practice. I currently practice some form of art every evening and late into the night\, rarely missing a day. \nThis brings us to the title of my show\, “Reflections.” When I look back at my childhood\, I was always creating and making something. I loved woodworking\, wood burning\, leatherworking\, paper-mache\, and drawing\, and I had a knack for fixing things. As an adult\, I work in the classic auto restoration field. I never thought restoring and building classic cars and hotrods was considered artistic until I heard someone refer to a beautifully restored automobile as “Rolling Art”. \nI’ve had a hard time calling myself an artist\, but when I look back\, I think maybe I have been an artist all my life and just never realized it. \nI’m nowhere near where I want to be in the art world. I’m constantly learning by making mistakes\, growing\, improving\, and trying to make each piece better than the last. \nYou’ll notice in my current work that I love color\, light\, and shadows\, and I love drawing and painting “Reflections”. \nSee more of Steve’s work online: StevenDNicholson.com on Instagram: @nicholson_steveon and on Facebook: Steve Nicholson Art \nwww.ArtHouse310.com\nFacebook | @ArtHouse310\,  Instagram | @ArtHouse310\, TikTok | @AngieAwesomePants
