KELLY PATTON Artist Statement: Animal Talismans

Spirit guides visit my sketchbook from time to time, often in the form of animals.  They are compilations of memories such as collecting rocks along a river, having philosophical conversations, or an encounter with a strange animal at the zoo.  They speak a language through their gestures and surrounding symbols that reveal messages.  The narrative is painted and transformed into a talisman that offers guidance and healing.

Talisman: An object that is thought to have magic powers and bring good luck.

Bio: Kelly Patton is the creator of books that conjure childhood mischief and wonder to inspire creativity, encourage self-care and bring us closer to nature. From a young age she began to explore her interests in the supernatural by illustrating a Tarot deck and wrote and painted pictures for children’s fantasy stories. She earned her fine arts degree, traveled throughout Europe and lived alone in the woods, all the while recording her stories and lessons learned through her paintings. Kelly recognizes her characters as talismans who have the power to attract positive change and transformation.

Kelly is the creator of the oracle deck Secret Woods published by Schiffer Red Feather in 2021. The deck includes 28 cards and a 72-page companion book that feature unique animals, nature spirits and unusual creatures who offer deeply heartfelt advice.

OFELIA STUDIO MM, an artist from Ofelia Studio, is “a lettering artist”, as he’ll tell you if you ask him what does.

“If I say I do calligraphy, typography, script or graffiti, people’s imagination fills in the blank for them on what image their subconscious tells them I should embody. And when that image doesn’t match, many conversations stop there. After I say I do lettering, and that blank stare claims their faces, I pull out my digital ‘pocket gallery’, and conversations can go in a myriad of directions depending on where they make a connection”.

He is self-taught since elementary days.

“I came across a copy of an Old English font page in elementary school, and I religiously absorbed every line, every curve, every taper till it became second nature to create from memory. I didn’t even know calligraphy pens existed till ninth grade, which by then, I didn’t need”.

He is inspired by “any and everything that teaches me something new” and aims to create aesthetically pleasing and balanced pieces people can “feel themselves in”.

“I am always joyful when I am working on a piece, usually at a coffee shop, and someone passes by and looks over my shoulder, gets excited, tells me the piece’s detail, colors, style, etc., stirs up emotion; and then asks for personal pieces. I have always just drawn for myself, but the quote: “Artists create things you did not know you wanted”, honors and humbles me, as an art collector myself, when people request pieces from me. Over several years I have developed several styles; and as I gradually exhibit work, I may just have a piece for you”.
